So many designers and builders today have gone to crazy extremes to create something new and different with all crazy angles and hard lines and square windows and built as a throwaway boat. Thank goodness there are a few good boats out there. There is nothing better than a sailing vessel that simply looks exactly right! The ultimate designer of beautiful boats is Sparkman & Stephens, Olin Stephens design is a gorgeous vessel that just looks right! If it looks right, it sails great! This S&S designed center board sloop is a beautiful sailing yacht. She looks as perfectly right has she did the day she was launched in 1975. Actually even more perfect!
The classic CCA racer cruiser hull shape has a spoon bow and a counter stern with long overhangs to add that waterline when she’s heeled. This is the S&S design # 1966 by Olin Stephens which was the evolution of his Finisterre design. The modified full keel has a deeply cutaway forefoot and does not extend aft to the rudder. It is a modified almost fin keel with encapsulated ballast and skeg mounted rudder. With the center-board up, the draft is only 4’2”. Compared to earlier full keel designs, the reduced wetted surface resulted in a great deal more speed. The underbody design at the time was very much a racing boat. The shallow draft with the board up makes this boat absolutely dreamy in the Bahamas. She is a very comfortable sea kindly boat that will surprise you and anyone next to you! In fact, the owners report that couples cruising on some mighty good old boats like the Alberg 30 occasionally get whiplash watching Silkie stride by!
It is indeed a great pleasure to offer you a lovely classic, beautiful boat that is all upgraded for cruising! Silkie, as she is called is our kind of classic boat. She is a perfectly balanced gorgeous S&S sloop with the hull laid up of solid fiberglass in 1974 by Allied Boat Company Inc. This S&S designed sloop known as Design No 1966, or the Allied XL-2, has been lovingly adored, maintained and updated by her owners for the past 16 years. She has been upgraded to a serious cruising boat with a Boom Furler, solar and wind, and Cape Horn steering. All the electronics have been updated with B&G radar and chart plotter complete with AIS. Silkie has safely taken her owners cruising for many trips on the East Coast, to the Caribbean and the Bahamas several times. Silkie is maintained in ship shape working order as she is a real cruising boat. When you see her, you will understand her owners have devoted the past 16 years to maintaining and restoring Silkie. A surveyor in 2014 put the replacement value at a half million dollars. In fact you could never ever build this boat today. Luckily Silkie is in perfect condition. You will be so proud to own a real boat like this!

The S&S Allied XL-2 sloop is a perfectly lovely vessel at 42 feet with a beam of 11’6” she is sleek and……well, Silkie! The aft cockpit sloop is quite lovely down below where she feels just like a sleek racer cruiser of the bygone days. With her narrow beam and long lean lines and a beautiful S&S sheer she is a classic sloop and a perfect boat for a couple to easily manage. The layout below starts with the traditional v-berth forward with the head just aft to starboard and storage adjacent. The salon has custom seating and cabinetry to port with a large dinette to starboard. The dinette seating was redesigned to offer comfort with superior lumbar support and knee rolls. The swiveling lounge chairs on the port side as functional as they are interesting and they are very comfy. All along the port side the custom cabinetry creates a really expanded storage area for cruising to the Bahamas, where you actually need to bring your ships stores. The nav station is just aft to starboard at the companionway with a spacious quarter berth behind it. The berth is used as a sit down chart table area and ships office with all electrical breaker panel and ships instruments. The quarter berth offers a nice sea berth on a passage right next to the companionway. The traditional galley to port is right at the companionway with complete amenities including a well insulated refrigerator and a freezer with a new 12v system, a propane stove, and stainless steel counters with a beautiful large sink and dish draining area.
Silkie’s owners find her very comfortable on a passage or at anchor. Her easy motion and sea kindliness are enhanced by her well laid out design, handholds and comfortable seating. There really is nothing better than swiveling lounge chairs on a passage to provide a respite from the helm.
This vessel has a functional stand up navigation station on the starboard side of with available seating at the forward edge of the quarter berth. All of your ships controls and electrical panel is located at the nav station.
Navigation and Communication
Comprehensive 110v shore power and 12v system with solar and wind generation with two alternators. The design foundation relies on two high quality 8D (Rolls/Surette 12 volt HHG-325) wet cell batteries new in 2014. When the house bank is enjoying a charge of more than 13.2 vdc, from either solar, wind, alternator, and/or shore power battery charger, Blue Sea Systems 7600 Charging Relay shares the charge with the Optima Red Top AGM start battery. The scheme has proven automatic and reliable.
